Costa Concordia safe Theft

The “Collectif des Naufragés Français du Costa Concordia” – an association of French Costa Concordia victims has released a devastating “J’Accuse” against Costa for massive theft of personal objects. They allege that all safes below deck 6 have been “lost” and that no personal belongings of value were recovered on decks above deck 6. This after  4 years of salvage and demolition. Costa, they say, claims that since jewels and money were not declared before the ship began the cruise, they have no responsibility for the loss. As though a hotel were to ask its guests to declare anything of value before they take possession of their room. The mystery remains: how could hundreds of safes simply “Disappear” into thin air or the waters of Giglio without anyone noticing? Is an investigation being opened? Incredible photos of inside the Costa Concordia

http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/photos-costa-concordia-shipwreck-jonathan-danko-kielkowski

These incredible pictures were taken by German photographer Jonathan Danko Kielkowski from inside the Concordia, left open to access on a Sunday morning in Genoa. they appeared in Vice News in Germany and then Vice UK. They give a truly eerie sense of what happened on board, and how the company, a year since its removal from Giglio, still has not invested the time and resources into dismantling it. Spooky.

Harmony of the Seas – big ships big issues

harmonyHarmony of the Seas, 362 meters long (Costa Concordia only 290 meters), 16 decks, (Concordia 13 decks) 70 meters tall, 5490 passengers (Concordia 3780 passengers), is the biggest cruise ship ever. Built at Saint Nazaire, in France, she began sea trials yesterday, 10th March 2016. Ever bigger ships, more passengers, booming cruise business bring with them also big issues. For full time lapse of construction see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk_JIHel7To

It took almost five hours to evacuate 4000 people from Costa Concordia – how long to evacuate 5,500? Where will a ship like this dock?  Will she plough the Giudecca canal in Venice, like all the others, destroying the most beautiful city in the world, pumping thousands of tons of fumes into the air? What are the financial interests behind ever bigger cruise ships? Why have close sail-bys been authorised again after the Concordia disaster?

These are questions Millstream Films & Media asks in “Venice:The Whole Story”, “Moving the Mose” and “Costa Concordia:The Whole Story”. We will continue to follow the giants of the seas in these pages and in documentaries by Millstream Films & Media.
